It takes a real man to wear pink.

I have a fondness for shirts in pink, lavender and those shades of green that are much more likely to be found in the ladies' department in general.  I think of them as 'spring' colors, mostly pastels, and it's no doubt due to those formative years when preppy was fashionable.  The comments I hear are mostly positive, though I'm sure there are some ( Read more... )

"near complete disregard for gender norms"

that's the nicest thing anyone has said about me in a long time! thank you so much.

the idea that I've heard about why it's harder for people to be comforatble with boys doing "girl things" or girls doing "girl things" is that deep down, we generally have hiararcial notions of gendered stuff.

a girl doing "boy things" is aspireing to a "higher level/more valued" things. seeing a boy doing "girl things" runs counter to what we value in a hiarical view or gendered things.

this is why I'm so comfortable as a stay-at-home-parent and being a feminist/queer. I try to veiw all "gendered things" as equal. it's socilty's freaken problem that what I do isn't valued like "paid work" not mine. I understand that what I do is just as valueable as "paid work"

Actually pink shirts are all the rage amongst the early teen set right now. I'm not sure if it's a hip-hop thing or what. My 12 year old nephew got one for Christmas two years ago and was delighted as everything. (His conservative Christian parents, not so much.)

The place to go for manly shirts in girly colors is India. I got this awesome mint-green button down business shirt there. Since they have darker skin in general they can get away with more florid colors. So there is quite a choice!

Colors for babies gerbil_lady December 25 2008, 19:59:53 UTC
Somewhere in the last year or two I read that at one time, about a hundred years ago or so, the de rigeur colors for babies were reversed from what they are in ours, which goes to show how fluid these things truly are.

Cheering on free choice, diversity and the freedom to be you and me - me!
