John introduced me to a friend of his from Pittsburgh not too long ago. Erin is a small, meek girl working on her MFA in creative writing. I first saw her in a coffee shop where she gave me a folio of her writing in a plain black folder.

okay, normally i really hate poems immediately when abnormal spacing is used, but it almost always seems contrived to me. "look how zany i am, some lines are tabbed all over!" the beatniks were the last people to use it and seem original, and even that was a stretch ( ... )

A lot of the things she's given me are fun to look at because of the spacing. That black folder has a couple poems that are written on thin strips of paper taped to a sheet with a crazy design on it.

The lines start on the outside then descend into the center in rings, so near the end of it, you notice how fast the design is spinning as you read. It's pretty cool.

it's so easy to write poetry in the style of good poetry without actually being good. this is different.
