He came out because his lover or someone who knew about his affair was threatening to expose him and he had no choice. So he came out on top, figuratively speaking, by resigning for personal reasons rather than being humiliated by some other schmuck.

Maybe it didn't come across the way I wrote it, but it was supposed to be like I gave him the advice in the past that he could just keep covering it up and it would never catch up with him. Not to make fun of the guy or his situation. I think he handled it well. Instead I was kinda making fun of myself 'cause that's the advice I really would've given, save for the "Besides, do you really think the American public cares about the personal life of someone in a position of power?"
I didn't know for sure that he was being blackmailed or whatever, but anyone could guess he came out with it when he did because of such a reason. Obviously he did what he did in order to maintain an upperhand.
Y'know what's funny? This is very obviously about a guy being gay. Guiliani was an adultering bastard and no one cared because it was with women. I mean, his wife cared. But no one was expecting the guy to resign.

well, there is a little more to it than that; he gave his lover a 6-figure government job, and this guy did not even pass the necessary security clearances for that job. so i think he resigned not just because of the affair, but because of the questionable way he used the state's money in relation to the affair.
i wish it weren't so, though. i'd be interested to see how he would have done in the november election after all of this.
