She tended to blame either evil conflict causing man designers or evil outside influence girls who take advantage of parents and do not listen and blah blah blah she's just jealous because she's not the only voice booming in her child's ears. The irritating thing about all of her huffing and puffing about Becky's mother losing family politics because she actually seems to trust her child stems, I think, from April mistakenly believing that everyone likes Becky best.

You see, just as the misguided child sees Mira as a Saturday morning cartoon villain because self-serving idiots lied and she's too eager to please not to see things through the prism of bad people bossing her around, her lunk-headed belief that if she admits to feeling envy, she'll be this monster who can only feel bad things allows her to be influenced by a pub bore father who's convinced that since he quit guitar lessons in frustration, Becky will die alone and miserable and a twit mother with a hate-on for popular girls because she blames them for her being Luann De

The other annoying thing is that Elly complains about Liz dressing like a hobo for no reason. It's not as if hysterical wailing about her throwing her childhood in the trash when she doesn't want to be left out

I still think that strip should have had one more panel at the end where Elly said "What's birth control?" and Michael facepalmed.

Furthermore, I don't think Elly can relate to this because aside from the rare occasions where she dressed like Central Casting's idea of what a hippie looked like when she wanted to make her mother scream, her preferred clothing style tends towards the shapeless and dowdy. People were supposed to like her for her character, not for what she was wearing.
The problem is that when she's not afraid of a social situation, she tends towards volcanic rages so there's less of her than meets the eye. People steer clear of the misfit who stands around yelling at air molecules when her delusions collide with reality so she could glam up and still be seen as someone to avoid.

Very true. When Rhetta and Martha dress with fashions that are not shapeless and dowdy, you know that they are not meant for Mike. Mike prefers Deanna because that way, they can share clothes.

I can imagine a conversation like this:

Marian: We almost never had trouble with the way Elly dressed. Aside from rare occasions when she aped the people Friday and Gannon arrested because I'd angered her somehow, she usually dressed as if it was still V-E Day.

Elly: But I was a terrifying rebel.

Marian: No. You weren't. You were the frightened mouse convinced that pedestrian love poems were porn.

But Elly went to the coffee houses and she sang the songs against that war and stuff. 🙄
