I have spent *so* little time on LJ lately and want to do more, but I'm also kind of concerned that it'll shrivel away with its current ownership.

I bought my dad a copy of Roger Tory Peterson's A Field Guide to the Birds, second edition, 1939. It includes this entry, in between doves and cuckoos:

Очень жалко, но всё хорошее когда нибудь кончается. Пронеслись летние месяцы и с ними пронеслось удивительное время моего знакомства и надеюсь всё таки дружбы с болотными совами. Imagine my surprise when I opened the kitchen curtains and found a juvenile robin sitting in our birch tree. I'd never seen one before and I was pretty excited!

At the Woodland Park Zoo today, we saw a brown booby (Sula leucogaster) that lives in the penguin exhibit. Normally, I wouldn't count a zoo animal on my life list, of course. But according to the docent, this bird turned up in Seattle having caught a ride on a ship, and is free to fly off at any time. Its wings are unclipped, and there is no roof ( Read more... )
