I think in these 'lows', try not to sell your good qualities short. Clearly, you have some kind of focus that is very, very admirable. It often seems that this is exactly what think you lack--you can't focus on your writing. But I think rather, you have trouble taking focus off of one "big" goal at a time.
I mean, you had a desire to travel, to be abroad, (to love?) and you lived in Africa for years. Not everyone has that kind of focus and dedication to one of their passions.
You came back and had a need to focus on your weight and health, and you've really done that. And have not, as far as I can tell, given up on it. And lord knows that a 'diet' or exercise would be the first thing I'd give up when just about anything went wrong.
So. I guess my advice would be: either work on ways to increase your ability to 'multitask' (not like, walking and chewing gum...multi-life-task, the thing that no one is good at and why life coaches became a lucrative career path) or, allow yourself the freedom to

I've had the same relationship with drawing and painting. My whole life I wanted be one of those people that could draw ridiculously well. Every time I would draw something it was crap. Then I took a drawing class and I found out I have a pretty decent talent of creating beautiful works of art. I was pleasantly surprised and vowed that I would always draw. The last time I drew anything was a week before that class ended. I've beaten myself up countless times thinking about the great work I could be doing with a pencil and paper. Then I realized, hobbies aren't meant to be a full time job. At least I don't think they are
