I was roaming around the news online and found this little tidbid from that bastion of journalistic integrity, the New York Post ( Read more... )

And though I'm no expert (haha yanks), doesn't right-y radio programming in the states have to have a certain percentage of liberal content? While the liberals aren't affected?

Absolutely not.

There used to be a thing called 'The Fairness Doctrine'. This was a law that said that both views of any given situation had to be included in a news report.

This was repealed by Ronald Reagan.

So the answer is, in short, no. Conservatives argue that there is a monolithic liberal bias in the media. (Though many of them now admit that this is really a smoke screen.) Really, the media isn't biased towards liberals or conservatives so much as it is to whatever narrative it finds most satisfactory.

Check out www.dailyhowler.com. It's got good insight into the way political media works. :P

I believe that there is /some/ bias when it comes to political media. Though it's really an overall effect. I mean, which is obviously more pro-Brush? BBC or CNN?

But you're right about media going to greener pastures.

I heard somewhere that media in the US had some unfair slant going on, so I wasn't too sure. Thanks for clearing that up! US media works a bit differently from Canadian. Here, all our media is technically owned by about four huge conglomerates that operate under some government control. Such as 51% of programming and advertising must be Canadian, etc, etc.

We're very bitchy about our government in our media. You see more critiques than praises of our government and opposition. We're all nice and polite and eh in the facade, but deep down, we're vicious lumberjacks.

Actually, I find that the bias isn't so much on the ideology of the news. The news is increasingly driven by what will attract attention and ratings. Thus, they toss up big and splashy stories that the American people will tune into. There is little fact checking, as of late, as there is a scramble to get the news up and on the television first. Ultimately, journalistic integrity is taking a poor back seat to the almighty dollar.

But I'm also a cynical conservative so what do I know? ;)
