The Promise of Happiness got better and I'm glad I read it all.
But I'm even gladder to turn to Lark Rise to Candleford by Flora Thompson. It's much more readable than I ever thought it would be. -

I'm not getting on very well with The Promise of Happiness. I would probably abandon it but Justin Cartwright is one of the writers appearing at our local Fiction Festival in March and I'm doing my conscientious best to read as much as I can of as many of the authors as I can because it's more interesting hearing them speak if you've read something ( Read more... ) -

I'm well into Brooklyn by Colm Toibin. It's very good, very readable and I'm enjoying every word. It's about an Irish girl who travels to America to find a career as work is in short supply in her home town. Set in the 50s, I think, perhaps a little later ( Read more... ) -

Geurnica was all right. Parts of it I liked. The descriptions of the bombing of Geurnica felt very real as if the author had actually experienced it. And it makes you want to stare long and hard at Picasso's painting (referred to in the book). Not sure I like this much. When I start counting pages it's a bad sign.
