I don't know if this is going on in the rest of the country/world, but there has been a disturbing rash of anti-gay violence in the NYC area lately. Not to mention that one of the candidates for governor made a televised speech where he stated (and I quote) "I don't want them [children] to be brainwashed into thinking that homosexuality is an ( Read more... )

People are acting as if treating GLBTGetc people as equals will bring about the destruction of this country. People thought the same thing when slavery was ended and integration (eventually) happened, when women won the right to vote, etc.

Everything will be so much better once we get past this craziness.

I love kids like that-- the ones who don't give a shit about traditional gender values or whatever, and just dress or act how they want-- wearing a dress or pink or blue or pants or whatever. And it's kids like that that give me hope when bullshit like that shitty brainwashed quote comes up.

*sighs* the prop 8 thing in california is stupid. i was there, i stood in line for hours and hours and hours with thousands of other couple to try and marry. i KNEW that it wouldn't last long enough to do any significant change for the good. i knew it would be shut down. all of is makes me so sad. what a brave family in that clip.

Wow. I am surrounded by such a diverse and tolerant group of friends that I sometimes forget that people still hate other people for no good reason.

I feel lucky to have this same problem. I have so many openly gay/ bisexual friends that I don't even think of it as an issue until it pops up in the news. (I have the same experience with racism- I grew up in the whitest of white communities, but there weren't enough coloured people for anyone to bother being racist so I kind of assumed it was a thing of the past. Now I have classmates from the deep south and am discovering that this is not the case).

I think alternative sexual identities are well on their way to becoming accepted, but unfortunately there's still some distance to cover :(.
