I finished reading American Psycho, thank goodness. Extraordinary book but it draws such a vivid picture of its narrator’s psychosis that I felt a little insane reading it

I hope all goes well with your grandmother. Have a good time at the concert.
I read Anne Lammott's book on writing, the name of which escapes me now, and took out one of her inspirational books (not sure if it was Traveling Mercies or another book) from the library, but in the press of other reading, never got around to it. Let me know what you think of it.
Wasn't Bret Easton Ellis' first book Bright Lights, Big City? I actually don't remember any of his others making much of a splash except American Psycho. He is, btw, a grade A misogynistic jerk, not that that says anything about the quality of his writing, just the quality of his character. He's been quoted recently as saying that film, and film directing, requires the male gaze, implying that women can't adequately direct films.
Bret Easton Ellis' 1st book was Less Than Zero, Bright Lights, Big City (which I read but never liked quite as much) is by Jay McInerney. I've read a lot of BEE interviews recently and didn't happen upon the remark about the male gaze but it sounds like something he'd say. He has shall we say major women issues. At least in his most recent novel women have gone from being prey to predators, which I suppose is a step up. Definitely a jerk in a lot of ways yet I find myself completely obsessed with his books. Maybe I've gotten too good at suppressing the outraged feminist part of myself. You need filters if you're going to enjoy any mainstream media but you can reach the point where you accept stuff that's just not cool. Of course there's a part of me that really goes for obnoxious, macho bad boys like Quentin Tarantino. I want to slap them around.
It should also be noted that whatever Bret Easton Ellis thinks about female directors the most financially successful and critically acclaimed adaptation of one of his novels, American Psycho, was directed by a woman.
Thank you. She was the doctor Friday and he gave her a Cortisone shot which has given her some relief. She's talking about surgery but realistically I don't think any responsible doctor would be willing to operate on her at this point.
Thank you. It is nice to get out, I too often fall into the routine of going to work, running errands, etc then just watching movies during my free time.
