I found myself drinking lots of Kolsch - but have yet to try a 1/2 of larger here to see if I have been converted to it's evil ways.

Unlikely. Kölsch is top-fermented like ale before being conditioned like lager, and being German it's subject to Reinheitsgebot so it's free of the chemicals found in what passes for lager here.
