i almost got robbed.

Mar 09, 2006 13:05

This morning, I was upstairs on the train to Bankstown, and a guy  - Tongan maybe or maybe a very dark Lebanese, and about 20-25 years old, wearing a Bulldogs cap - started looking at me from down the stairs. He said something to me. I had headphones on and didn't hear, and took them off ( Read more... )

Whoa, that's nuts.
Welcome to my life, Tim! Want me to get him for you?

Sure, I might need a posse to get around Bankstown safely with.

We might square off with the retarded guy's gang, and possibly have a dance-off ala the video for Michael Jackson's "Bad".

I think you should opt for the "Beat It" style gang war, where you all end up dancing together, with the help of Eddie Van Halen.

i get by with a little help from eddie van halen.

eeeep! I once had this dude on a Melbourne train sit next to me and start talking about Marilyn Manson and how he has nowhere to live, etc etc. Then he asked what station I was getting off, and he said 'oh me too'. Then he moved closer to me and put his arm around me and I was freaking out but didn't do anything.

When we got to the stop he was fiddling in his pocket for something, I ran up to some lady who was getting off at that stop and asked her if she would pretend to know me because I was scared. We did a pretty good job at pretending to know each other (although I suspect he was drugged up enough to not notice anyway) and she was 'offering me a lift' and he asked if he could get a lift and she said 'oh no, and and would be in a car so there will be no room.

I'm glad you're okay and didn't get anything stolen!

thanks julie!

fiddling in his pocket for something - was that a knife in his pocket or was he just pleased to see you?

i guess that kind of stuff is why i spend most my time on trains either reading or listening to music or both. block out the outside world.

oooh, timmeh is trialing his lj posts in mess and noise now! :p

sorry to hear about your ordeal, although it doesn't seem that you were at all phased. you rock. <--- deliberate use of ambiguity. :D

yeah - it wasn't really an ordeal. the guy who did it was just kind of pathetic, really - but yeah, it was only later that i thought to myself, "oh shit, why the hell was i so blase about it?"

today i also started making first year psych students do my second experiment. (yay!) so yeah, it means i have about 10 minutes between students, and so i wrote that in the 10 minutes between students and then couldn't be bothered rewriting it for m&n.

It's never fun nearly getting robbed. I guess it's probably even worse if the robbing actually takes place. I've have a few attempted robbings in my time and they were both out west. It's unsuprising given that most people live out there and there's not much east of the city. :)

It really goes to show how much the crime situation is over-hyped. One attempted rob in all those years.

yeah, it is all overhyped. i've probably been lucky to an extent in my travels out in the west of sydney, though...but yeah, you make your own luck. i kind of think that if you don't provoke them and don't treat them as dangerous criminals but as people, they're less likely to try anything stupid. (and let's face it, it's stupid to try and rob someone on a train, there's surveillance cameras everywhere and trains are easy for police to stop at the next station and catch the guy if necessary.)

The funny thing about this story is that he pointed the finger-gun at his own head. What a dolt.

Glad you're okay, man... had a fun experience on Saturday night waiting for a taxi with some deranged middle-aged dude who reckoned that he'd shove a rocket up my arse and send me to the moon. And that his mother had 15 kids and was mother of the year. I had to fight back my natural urge to be a smartarse. :)

He had the damn fool idea that I was scared of him, when in fact I was working out whether to openly mock him, smile and nod, or suckerpunch him. Went for the second option, before about 8 more people joined the taxi queue, and I decided that there weren't going to be any more taxis for a while (Mardi Gras night, after all!) and that I'd be better off walking home. Which I probably was, really!
