My ear got pressed to the mat and dragged along? Someone got me in a tight headlock and my ear got folded over? Someone accidentally hit me in the ear while going for a move? any number of variations on the above sorts of things are possible.
The short answer is, I don't know.
A longer answer is that this sort of thing is a bit random, something causes a blood vessel to rupture and a clot to form, which causes the blood to pool up between the skin and the cartilage. Because this doesn't happen straight away, I didn't notice until the next morning. I've hurt my ears a number of times over the period I've been doing BJJ, and they're usually just a bit tender for the next few days. As a result, whatever caused this just didn't stick in my mind as an important event.
