A few things you have to understand about Toby and me before we begin:

We lived on the same block since the day we were born, although we didn’t notice each other until we got put in the same classroom in first grade. Well, I noticed him, anyway. Everyone noticed Toby the first day, for two reasons: one, because the kid’s eyes were so bad that he ( Read more... )

Unless it’s something like a barn-raising, there’s nothing in the world that can’t be done just as well by yourself, as far as I can tell.

This made me laugh out loud.

There was such a lot of this that made me really sad, but I'm just so glad that Toby stayed friends with you. He just seems like that kind of person. I like him.

I like him too. He's a hard friend to lose.

I had a kindergarten teacher like your first grade one. She was an absolute terror, and belittled us every chance she got. I put a stapler on her seat in retaliation. Not a single one of my classmates snitched on me, it was awesome >D

God, reading groups in primary are brutal. Don't you just love it when they send the advanced readers out with the older kids, and then BAM you're the only midget in a group of looming fifth graders ready to squash you into the ground just because >_> School system is so full of hate, seriously.

I think everyone had one of those, didn't they? The teacher who was out for revenge , or who got off on humiliating children.

Wow! I was always the only one ahead of my group in reading ... not sure if I preferred it that way or not though.

I suspect that nowadays, just for the very stigma involved, they don't divvy kids up into such obvious, separate reading groups. But you can always skip to the end.

Such a sweet story! I used to rush through my schoolwork too. One year the boy next to me and I raced through our social studies coursework for the whole year. We would get 10-15 minutes at the end of the period to start our homework and used the time to get further and further ahead... until the teacher caught us and told us to stop.

I also walloped a couple of the boys in my kindergarden class ;)

I have never understood this problem with reading ahead. So many teachers seem to have issues with it.

I think the ability to forgive something like a broken nose between friends is stronger when you're children. It's still there as adults, but for most, it's harder to find.

This was a really well-told story! Thank you for sharing! :)

Grown-ups are so litigious with their friendships. You can't risk a well-timed kick in the butt (or punch in the nose).
