There is an old tradition stating that any encounter with the sea is preordained and that any interference in such encounters will cause the sea's wrath to turn back on the interferer. In other words, if somebody falls in the ocean, no one is allowed to save them. Occasionally sailors will come to the edge of the rail and shout down things like "

The ocean is a cruel mistress, ask any sailor. She has no heart at all, (any sailor will tell you the sea's a female. Temperamental and vengeful, calm and embracing.

Your story is just right. I enjoyed it.
