Good post. I live in Atlanta, and the various races are so used to be together all the time that most people are pretty indifferent to the race of their friends and coworkers. Most of us are also familiar and comfortable with each other's cultures, too. That "not black enough" thing drives me crazy, though. I had a best friend (she's moved away now) who's black and was always getting told that she wasn't black enough. She'd grown up on military bases around the world, so she was sort of outside of a lot of black culture. I remember she broke up with a boyfriend who constantly accused her of being "too white" because she had a housecat and because she cared enough about it to take it to the vet. She had another boyfriend for a while that refused to meet me because I was white. She dumped him, too.
