I am sure you all realize by now that the Headsman is a merciless force. Prisoners will not be released and interference only brings more suffering ( Read more... )

Your lord must be blind.

Say what you will of Lord Deior; it changes nothing.

Just another damn boot licker.

[And Kevas wanted to like these people. He really did.]

How do you justify torturing children? I really want to know just what kind of twisted freak I'm dealing with here.

I justify nothing. What Sollux did was destructive, but noble. He should not have been punished so severely.

However, the Lord disagreed, and so it goes.

[It seems the library has a little book worm squirming around its cases! Malkus hears the message from his journal and merely nods in agreement. The doctor was raised to not question the lord of a land and so far such a way of viewing things hasn't done him much wrong...yet.

As for his reasons towards lurking around this library? Malkus is merely taking in the amazing variety of literature and information this place has! He could honestly spend days reading on past adventures of daring heroes, the wild animal kingdom, and even the arts of the ages! As evidenced by a growing stack of these topics on a table. He's paying particular attention to the beautiful detail of these art books at the moment. Things are peaceful all alone in the keep library.]

[But Malkus is not alone for long. From behind him a bird silently ruffles its feathers. It looks rather like a heron, but its feathers are every color of a washed-out rainbow.

It approaches, but then stops at Malkus's side and looks up at him with purely white eyes.

And it stares.

Unblinkingly.]

[A chill jolts up the doctors spine as he feels the presence of something else approaching. He sloooowly turns his head and-...AND-]

O-Oh! My word, what a beautiful thing you are, hm?

[This. Library. Is. Awesome. Malkus hasn't seen a bird quite like this one before. If he wasn't so distracted with the fancy feathered friend, he'd definitely try and see if he can find the name of such a creature in one of these books!]

And what would your name happen to be, now?

[He reaches out to gently touch the top of the things head. It's odd that the keeps birdy residents don't seem to fear people as much as they normally should. Still, Malkus ain't complainin'. Those eyes are as unusual as they are mystifying...And...slightly eerie, the longer they stare at him.]

[The bird tilts its head to the side and blinks at Malkus, allowing him to touch its head. Look, it's friendly!]

[From the shadow by the book where physically a man of his stature could not be, steps Duran.]

A fair warning, Rem. But I fear they will not listen.

[His tone is blank, as is his expression.]

They are a stubborn group. Perhaps with the death of the woman they will heed our warnings a little more.

[His hand on his closed journal, Rem looks to Duran.]

I wish that they would. Their loyalty is understandable, even admirable, but ultimately foolish.

[He sighs.]

You attended the punishment, yes?

[Duran's gaze sweeps slowly across the library. He nods.]

Indeed, I did. I took it upon myself to aid the Headsman in keeping guests out of the punishment area.

[The man smirks, ever so faintly. Duran is amused.]

Asma did not appreciate my interruption.

[Rem smiles in return.]

I am sure she did not. Was she wounded? Rather, was anyone save for the deceased woman wounded?

[Nieta catches sight of the dog with the book in its mouth and walks quietly up behind it.

In one smooth motion, she goes to snatch the book and gently smack the dog's nose with it.]

Books are not for dogs to chew.

[The dog shakes its nose, then perks its ears and looks up to Nieta. It whines pleadingly, but then its mouth and neck seem to... shift.

Then it speaks.]

Come now, Nieta! I was not even using teeth.

No, but it was in your mouth.

[She pulls out the tail of her shirt and wipes imagined moisture from the book.]

It cannot taste nice.

[Rem sits at Nieta's feet and cocks his head to the side. It's a perfectly canine motion.]

Taste is no matter. And hands look so strange on dogs!

Jack is in a fine nettle.

He wanted answers. Any answers.

Books. Books were things that held answers. Well, they held a lot of words and within those words could be the answers to the riddles he was looking for.

So find himself at the library he did, and he went tearing through the books at a steady rate. Picking up only ones that he deemed to possibly have an interest in what he was looking for. Forest. Trees. Mountains...Rum? He'll keep that one! And discarding all others on the floor when he did not find any information pertaining to his needs.

Now, what's this? Scrolls? What would be on these scrolls here?

Jack unrolls the first, which apparently was the best.

A map.

Now that was useful.

Jack pockets the map in his overcoat and goes to continue his search for information.

Rem has been watching you, Jack. Though it's nothing he can't clean up, you've made a fine mess of his library.

Quickly, silently, Rem slides up behind Jack. He places a hand on his shoulder and grips it.

"Hello."

He never you coming.

The good captain shrieks and flails, dropping the book he just picked off the shelf. While both shrieking and flailing he turns around to see exactly who startled him so. This only produces another rather unmanly noise that his flailing hands attempt to pluck out of the air and stick back in his mouth where it belongs.

The he stops and tries a nervous smile at Rem.

"He-ello?"

The shrieking doesn't even seem to faze Rem. (He's heard it all before, anyway.) Without taking his unblinking stare off of Jack, Rem sweeps a hand back at the trails of books the pirate left.

"What have you done to my library? Have you no sense of order?"
