I've only been to San Francisco once or twice but I'm dying to go back so I can visit Angelic Pretty that just opened up and Btssb. If you are into Japanese fashion I'd definitely stop there. I'd say a trip to both Japan town and Chinatown are a must.

Btssb is housed in this building, they also have a cool cinema: http://www.newpeopleworld.com/

If I could pick any place to stay I would want to try the Hotel des Arts with specialty rooms painted/designed by artists: http://www.sfhoteldesarts.com/index.php

I stayed at a small Victorian style hotel (I can't remember the name), there are dozens of tiny, charming places with antique furniture at somewhat affordable prices if you search yelp.

if golden gate park is the only place in san francisco you visit, it could be enough.

there's the conservatory of flowers, the arboretum, aka the botanical garden, the japanese tea garden, the de young museum, the academy of sciences, hobo hill, the bison and a million other things, and if you keep going aaallll the way out there's the windmills and ocean beach, and then you might as well go up to the camera obscura (which unfortunately is open odd hours) and sutro baths.

you can pop out of the park to grab the best turkey sandwich ever at arguello super or some piroshkis and borscht at cinderella bakery, or pizza at arizmendi.

to enhance your experience, you can try this. it's not a substance, but there are those to be had as well.

Ahh, thanks for bringing back memories of the sutro baths. I visited a lovely girl a few years ago in SF and we went there to look about and had such a romantic time.

stay at pacific tradewinds!!!!!! i went to san francisco as my first lone-trip, my frist lone-stay at a hostel and i stayed there, and i have yet to have a better experience. everyone was so friendly, helpful, young, and varied--it felt like entering a little travelling family, group dinners and all. cheap hostel prices for a really good time, plus good location (i walked through chinatown and through to north beach/the piers and all)
have fuuun!
