So the deal is, I leave for France two days before Cody's birthday. Rightly so, he is upset about this, but I've told him that I will make it up to him somehow, and I already have something in mind. He continues to mope, however, and seems to find it rather satisfying to see that this is causing me a significant amount of pain. I feel terrible

Enjoy france, you've told him you're upset about missing his birthday and you'll make it up to him that's all he should expect from you anything more and he's being a egocentric.
