Portland, Oregon is a fun place! I am always very excited when I visit, because there is this really interesting youth culture there that is entrepreneurial in nature. I'm talking 20 & 30-somethings when I talk about "youth". Plus all that green is soothing, I think. The summers are wonderful, with warm evenings and blackberries everywhere. It's mostly the Jan.-Feb. deluge than can get to people. My dad lives there, and he spends all of February getting sunshine at the Intl. Film Festival. Definitely visit, though!

I am stymied by Tumblr. I don't like that there's no place to really have a dialogue with people. I'm fine seeing what other people put up, but I can't really engage beyond, "Oh, that's kinda clever. Like." What then? IDEK.

Yes! The soothing green-ness of Portland is so appealing to me. I feel like all that green probably helps make up for the lack of sun. But I'm trying to plan our visit for a sunny-ish time (so probably late spring), because I'm trying to sell the bf on the place, and if it pours the whole time we're there, I know he'll be even more skeptical.

Yep. Me too. I know there are people who have figured out ways to have discussions on Tumblr, but I just can't get into it. It feels so indirect--like, you can reply to someone, but it's more like you're announcing your reply to the world rather than simply talking to one person. It just doesn't feel very personal or intimate to me.

I've found a really narrow niche where tumblr works for me, I think? It helps me catch a quick thought that's like, a comment section in search of a post. But mostly a thing that needs more of thought than that ends up becoming or being incorporated into an LJ post.

Orphan Black. Holy crap, I love this show. I'm actually mad that I watched it already, because now I have to wait around for season 2 like a chump.

MTE. like, exactly.

I really like House of Cards too. It's got that dark humor I always enjoy.

Anyway! I hope irritating emotional stuff works out for the better soon. And that you continue to feel like posting again. <3

I mostly go to Tumblr just to see what you and a few other people post. I'm so impressed with how you've been able to use it to do some pretty substantial-looking meta stuff. So, honest question--when you post meta on Tumblr, do you feel like you're actually communicating--like, having a dialogue--with people there? Or does it feel like you're presenting a paper? I still sometimes think I just haven't found the right niche with Tumblr. I don't know. I keep wanting things to work, but I think it may be doomed. I think I may just need to lead an LJ revival.

Orphan Black 4 lyf.

I actually think the depersonalized nature of Tumblr makes it a little bit more conducive to some subset of the conversations I want to have? Like, if there's a pervasive ~vibe that you get from fandom (wrt a particular character, or narrative device, or whatever), it's not really appealing to go stomping into the worst offenders' personal journals to tell them why they're wrong, or to parse things closely and make random examples out of people you don't really have a problem with, or to let things slide. With Tumblr, if I see something going around that's frustrating, (a) I can verify for myself that it's a problem because I'll have seen it pop up on my dash a couple times in a few days, (b) I can generally find something on-point to respond to fairly quickly, and (c) it is a lot less likely that it's going to be a whole dramatic ~thing, because the tone there is generally a little brusquer and louder ( ... )

Good luck with confusing lifeness!! And possible moving. I believe in you.

Lol, I hate tumblr forever. 90% of the things I reblog are really on queue because I cannot stand to be on that site for more than an hour a day. Sadly, I too have forgotten how to LJ due to final-year-of-uni reasons. /o\ /o\ /o\
