I actually used to have a different lj account under my regular online name, but certain situations forced me to open a new account. And for a long time on my new account, I had generic userpics because I was in essence "hiding."

Most people dont' want their coworkers, relatives, mortal enemies to stumble upon their livejournal for good reason. For a lot of people, myself included, lj needs to be a safe zone where they can feel free to express themselves. That's why all my entries are friends only.

Know what you mean, I try to stick with BathTub, but occasionally people beat me to it, so my back up is BathTubNZ, like it is here, on Ebay and Myspace.

It's a misconception to say that the point is for people to know who you are.

LJ is as anonymous as USEnet newsgroups were.

if the point of lj is to be anonymous, why does lj as for your name and for a pic?

There is no point to any facet of the Internet.

They are tools, to be used to whatever goal that the holder of the tool desires.

I give up. If I'm friended by someone and I can't figure out who they are, I generally don't friend them back.

Oh, I'll take a look at their info page and their pictures, but quite often that doesn't help me at all. I understand, brother. I feel your pain. (And then I try to ignore the pain and simply give up on figuring out who the person is.)
