Very interesting. I knew Tolkien liberally borrowed from various mythologies and legends when he was creating Lord of the Rings, but I had no idea he was lifting enitre names wholesale!

Well, now you can point to this whenever people come up and tell you Gandalf isn't a real name, as this provides evidence it was around even before LOTR! :)

Maybe that's true. However, to date we have two instances of this name being used in the entire histroy of the planet. Three, if we count our modern day G-dawg.

I would take total pride in the uniqueness of the name though.

Gandalf, do some more research man! Was this name ever used for people, or was it always tied in in fiction or mythology?
