(Co)incidental music

So, the SSHG exchange piece is currently flowing nicely, to the point where it's starting to dominate my thoughts to the detriment of housework / real work / feeding the children etc. But I still haven't got a title, which is bothering me, so I reverted to my standby of trawling though my music collection. And this is where the bizarre coincidence ( Read more... )

ramblings, sshg exchange

Congratulations on educating the kidlings. Mine like Thomas Dolby and Nick Drake so I'm pretty smug too lol.

I think you are right when you say that a song lyric might give the game away. That said, maybe if you stay away from the Meatloaf this time...

I have my title too and while it is familiar to me, I can't place where I got it from either. Isn't it weird how the brain works like that?

I'm very jealous of your son lol; my mom has no idea who the Cure is (though, I'm sure she'd recognize a song or two if she heard them). I spent most of my teens saying, "But you partied in the 80's! What do you mean you don't know who *insert 80's group here* is?!" I did have a lot of early exposure to Paul Simon, who is a bit folksy for my tastes, but I can definitely see the influence in the bands I like now : )

I actually have three fics with song-related titles, so I'll just go out and say that I may have one as well, just to throw off the scent lol.

To be fair to your mum, I think the 80's were particularly 'tribal' when it came to music - there were a lot of rival styles, and not a lot of crossover. There's loads of stuff I love now but didn't listen to at the time. The Jam being a case in point, actually - I didn't discover them until I was a student in the early 90's, courtesy of my then boyfriend (now husband!).

Very true. Plus, she's not as into music as I am, so I've been introducing her (or reintroducing her, in some cases), to some groups from that time period or later. A bit of a reverse, but I'm happy she's open to it : )

Ah, kids to day. You do realise how much music they have to discover? The 80's and the 90's were great eras.

And it's all just so easy to access as well now. I suppose the boys will go through my / my husband's CDs like I did through my dad's records, but I imagine they'll mainly end up downloading stuff. Pretty much the whole of music available at the click of a button - where on earth do you start?! They won't have the thrill of the hunt, though - that fantastic feeling of finally finding an album you've been looking for for years!
