Cas was deep in sleep, when a loud pounding woke him from his surprisingly pleasant dreams. His eyes flew open, he heard Dean grunt, and the arm that had been around his waist slipped away.

It took Cas a few seconds to realize the banging was coming from their door. He shook his head a few times, wiped the drool from the corner of his mouth, and reluctantly sat up. The former Jedi took a few deep breaths then stood and grabbed his blue shirt from the ground. He pulled it over his head, just before he opened the door.

Sam was standing there, his expression a mixture of excitement, and nerves. “I need you in operations now.”

“You found something?” Cas asked, excitement trickling through his veins.

Sam nodded once. “Maybe, but they won’t speak to anyone but you.”

“What about Dean?” Cas asked, still trying to shake the last traces of sleep off.

Sam grinned. “I just assumed he’d follow you.”

Cas shook his head, but his lips twitched. “We’ll be there.”

Sam jogged back down the hallway, before Cas realized he hadn’t told him who had requested to speak with him. No one outside of this base knew where he was, or how to reach him.

He’d find out soon enough.

Adrenaline was shooting through his body, as he turned and found Dean staring at him through bleary eyes. “What’s going on,” his words were thick with sleep.

“We need to get to operations - Sam’s got a lead.”

That was all it took. Dean’s eyes widened, and he leapt up, grabbing clothes as he went.

“Awesome,” he murmured while yanking on his pants.

Cas just hoped this wouldn’t turn out to be another dead end - the Chancellor had been silent for far too long, it was making him edgy.

Cas grabbed his shoes, and they both headed out.

Anna was on Cas’s heels as they stepped inside Operations. Cas had stopped at her room before joining Sam. She was a part of this as well, and he hadn’t wanted to leave her out. She deserved to be here.

She’d earned it.

Anna had not only grown in experience, but also in height. She’d had a growth spurt of sorts, and her head was now just below his shoulders. She held it high as she stood at his side. Dean had taken position on his other, and they stopped a few feet behind Sam who was talking in hushed tones with Ash.

Dean cleared his throat rather loudly, and Sam spun. He both smiled and waved them closer.

“You guys know a Bela Talbot?”

Cas stiffened - he hadn’t had any contact with her since the Alastair situation - he had no idea how she’d found them.

But, it was Bela, she had a way of always getting what she wanted.

Dean actually laughed, and Anna gave him an odd look, she‘d never had the pleasure. “You have got to be kidding me.” He chortled, his expression somehow bemused, and aggravated all at once.

Cas sighed. “Yes. I know her. She’s helped me in the past.”

“You trust her?” Sam asked, raising an eyebrow at Dean’s sarcastic snort.

That was a complicated question. He thought about it, and realized, the short answer was yes, but he knew Sam needed more than that.

“She’s never given me bad intel,” he paused, “and when I was hunting for Alastair, she gave me what I needed and didn’t ask for anything in return.”

That had meant a lot to Castiel, and he wondered if perhaps, Bela considered him a friend, or at least the closest thing she would have to one.

Sam studied him a moment. “Do you have any idea how she knew you were with us?”

Cas shrugged. “No, but she is very resourceful.”

Sam chuckled. “I’ve heard of her; that’s putting it mildly.”

“How’d she get through Ash’s security?” Dean asked.

“She didn’t,” Ash chimed in, his tone defensive.

Sam sighed. “She left us a… message - we have several outlying emergency communication terminals that are for our personnel who are on mission, or need help. She hacked into one, and invited us to contact her. We did - and then she told us she had information on Roman, and she would only speak with you.” He looked pointedly at Castiel.

“So does she know where we are?” Dean pressed, a trace of annoyance in his tone.

“No.” Sam said, no doubt in his voice. “We designed them with that in mind. She can’t track it back to us, and she can’t hack our com-link when we contact her. We’re good.”

Cas nodded. The separatist’s weren’t stupid. It was how they’d stayed alive so long.

“Can I speak with her?” Cas asked.

Sam nodded, and gestured for Ash to signal her.

A holo-image appeared in front of them. Bela was sitting on a chair, her feet up on a desk, and she was smiling. Her hair was pulled back, and her eyes locked with Cas’s. “Castiel, you don’t call, you don’t write. I’m hurt.”

Her tone was teasing, and held no animosity.

Cas found himself smiling. He honestly hadn’t expected to ever see her again.

“I’ve been rather busy.”

She laughed. “I’ve heard. Telling the Council to stuff it, up their prissy asses. I was impressed.” Her face darkened. “And Castiel, I’m glad you got him.,” she paused, then added quietly, “I only wish he could have suffered longer. He didn’t deserve the quick death he got.”

He could feel everyone’s eyes on him, felt Anna’s fingers grip his wrist, and Dean shifted closer. Even Sam stood taller, and it was humbling to have so many care about your well-being.

Cas smiled sadly. “He can’t hurt anyone else, that’s all that matters.”

She snorted, her expression clearly expressing her disagreement.

“But thank you. We probably wouldn’t have found him without your help.”

There was a slight softening around her eyes, and he thought maybe he was getting a glimpse of the ‘real’ Bela again, then it was gone, and she flashed him a cocky grin. “And now here I am, saving your adorable ass again.” She leaned forward, her feet settling on the floor. “But this time, it’s not going to come for free.”

Cas simply nodded; this wasn’t a surprise. He looked at Sam, who indicated they had the resources to offer payment.

Dean growled, and muttered, “figures,” and a few other choice phrases under his breath.

Bela smiled at him. “Oh, come now handsome. You know you missed me.”

Dean glared at her. “Yeah. Talking to you is as much fun as being trapped in a room full of bounty hunters with itchy trigger fingers who are all trying to kill me.”

Bela laughed. “You know how to pick them, Castiel.”

Cas couldn’t stop himself from smiling, but he didn’t rise to the bait. He instead asked, “What do you have?”

“Always business with you.” She grinned, then suddenly disappeared from view. They could hear shuffling, and grunting, then she stepped back into view holding a bound woman by her long, dark hair. Her face wasn’t visible as she struggled.

Bela yanked on her prisoners long locks, and placed a blade to her exposed throat. The woman stilled, and Cas had a perfect view of her face. His blood ran cold.

Anna made a small noise, and he clutched her shoulder.

“Is this something you’d be interested in?” Bela smirked.

Meg.

The woman who’d held him and Anna hostage on Devon Four. The woman who’d taken pleasure in harming him. Her partner Azazel had preferred to watch, as she’d beaten him, and whispered about all the horrible things she had in store for Anna and she had smiled the entire time.

And she had hurt Anna.

His Anna.

Anna who had, had nightmares for weeks afterwards.

His pulse quickened, and his heart slammed against his chest.

He took deep breaths - knowing anger wouldn’t help - and he swallowed it down, instead focusing on what this meant.

Meg and Azazel had worked for Dick Roman. She could have information on him, something they could use against him. She might even know about what he was planning, depending on what had happened once they’d fled Devon Four.

This was a good thing.

He glanced down at Anna, her shoulders were stiff, but her face was blank, and her breathing steady. He was so proud of her.

He met Dean’s eyes, the other man’s were glacial. Dean had seen images of her after the fact, and he knew he’d always wanted a ‘word with her.’ But he was keeping it reigned in, they all were.

“Yes, Bela. I think we are.”
