Why is it I'm in a perfectly good mood until Tony comes in? He's been out at a church function this evening, and things have gone pretty smoothly while he was gone

That sucks. I'd just tell him "I'm going out Friday night, sweetie. You make arrangements for the kids."

I know I should. But it's such a pain to feel like I have to beg for it, you know? He would expect me to get my parents to watch them. This would only work if it was his idea to begin with.
