No, I completely understand!abalotMay 6 2006, 19:57:30 UTC
Everyone is a little narrow-minded. I think that the characters were narrow-minded in their beliefs about society. I don't agree with their not wanting to work to live. Being able to work and choosing to not is not fair. That's part of life, you recieve what you work for! It always bothered me that these characters, and they are based on the real lives of the author and his friends, choose to do nothing to help themselves, while there were and are people who cannot do anything to help themselves. Sorry if I got away from myself just then. I just wanted to tell you that you are probably one of the least narrow-minded people I know! P.S. I LOVE RENT TOO!
Benny (the character with the job) was greatly cut out of the movie. He's a lot more involved in the Broadway production. He's actually the one who pays for the funeral, and Mimi's rehab, etc. I don't necessarily think that they don't want to work. It's that they don't want to do something that they're going to hate, e.g. Mark filming for Buzzline. He doesn't want to film news, he wants to film the mundane lives of people in New York.
I think it's because of the fact that they don't conform to what society wants them to be that they become the strong characters that they are.
And the show isn't really based on Jonathan Larson and his friends. It's because of his friends that he chose the "disease" as AIDS, but it's inspired by "La Boheme" by Puccini.
you should see the broadway show, there's more to it. :) working isn't bad, it's working for bad people that's bad. it isn't because benny works that he's hated, it's because he works for people who would rather crush homeless people than help them. i don't know, i agree with you but i can also strongly identify with their point of view, however one-sided it may be. i suppose that's why wesley nicknamed me the boheme chick when i first started going there. i wanted to break free of the mold of society. but then i got older and i realized that doesn't do anything except alienate me and how can i help anybody if i'm alienated? so there's compromise and mutual understanding and the realization you can catch more flies with honey (or clean feet). the problem with rent is that they haven't grown up yet. they're all still stuck in the 18 year old frame of mind.
wow, didn't mean to write a book. i miss you natalie. i hope you're doing ok. :)
