WORT this morning

I'm listening to the radio, and every song during the country/bluegrass hour is about whiskey today. Why? December 5th was the anniversary of the repeal of prohibition.

Ah, back in the day when it took a Constitutional Amendment to pass and enforce prohibition in the first place. Today, we have the completely unconstitutional DEA.

Well, someone has to maintain the existence of a criminal class. Otherwise the state would have to find someone else to demonstrate its authority on.

And that is part of the reason that the world's most powerful government has the highest prison population per capita.

It's a gray area exactly what you should and shouldn't be allowed to do with recreational drugs. Still, I find it irritating that you're responsible for what you do to others under the influence of alcohol (although not always as responsible, according to LAW & ORDER), but they protect the rights of businesses (including government ones) to blow carcinogens in the faces of their customers and employees.

But actually that just means that we are really tough on crime. Like hard core! The more people we put in prison, the more frightened other criminal types get. That's why we have such a low crime rate.

This system is also reasonably efficient at funneling public monies to the excellent and valuable organizations that run prisons. Go privatization! :P
