Having a tray of blood and cereal thrust upon was hardly how Xander expected to be welcomed home after a six month absence.
“Bring that down, would you?” Willow muttered, turning eggs in a frying pan. She poured milk, buttered toast and changed coffee grounds. Xander stared at the tray, while trying to stay out of the way of the Slayers-in-training, who seemed to multiply every few moments. “Well, why are you standing there? We hardly have room for me to stay in one spot, and I’m running this show.”
“I’ve been on a bus eight hours, gone for seven months, and smell like a pig farmer, due to being stuck next to someone with a fear of showers.” he said. Willow jerked around, wielding a spatula.
“Go deal with Spike. We have all the time in the world to catch up. He needs you now.” She pointed towards a door.
Juggling the tray, he managed to open the door without spilling a drop of blood. Turning the light on, he managed not to trip down the stairs. As he realized how quiet it was, he wondered if Spike was truly down there.
“Red, I’m not-Xander.” Spike’s voice dropped. “What are you doing here?”
“Willow told me to bring this down.” he murmured, holding the tray out. “How’ve you been?” He managed the last few steps slowly.
“Fine.” His voice seemed cold, but his eyes seemed hopeful. “You?”
“Can’t complain.” Xander set the tray down, and walked closer. Spike recoiled, a foul smell assaulting his nose. “Long bus trip, next to Philmore who doesn’t believe in showers.” Spike smirked. “I’m sorry.”
“Sorry?” Spike spat. “You’re sorry?” He hit the tray, ignoring the loud crash as the cereal bowl split apart. “I confessed how I felt! Wanted us to stop dancing around each other. Wanted to recover from the LA fiasco with you.”
“Do you know my track record for love?” Xander muttered, backing up, ready to make a quick exit if it proved necessary. “How many people I hurt?” He glanced up. “Your ability to love is STRONGER than anyone I’ve ever met. You got a soul just to have the CHANCE to have Buffy. How could I risk hurting you and ruining that?” Spike seized him by the shoulders, forcing him to stare into his eyes.
“Xander, my ability to love is ruined by not having you. You make me whole in a way no one- Dru, Harmony, Buffy.- has managed to.” Spike tilted his head. “Tell me what this tastes like,” He pressed his lips to Xander’s mouth, and gave him a chaste kiss, not meant to seduce.
Xander tasted love. He tasted trust. He tasted mournful sorrow.
“God.” Tears spilled down his cheeks. “I never meant to hurt you.” He gazed towards Spike. “I love you.”
“Know you do, Pet.” Spike wiped his own damp eyes on his sleeve. “Love you too.” He pulled Xander close, slowly stripping him. When Xander was down to his black silk boxers, Spike softly nuzzled the hollow of his neck. “Looks like you need to rest.” He lead Xander to a double bed.
As Spike cuddled him close, Xander could honestly admit that that it was the best sleep he had had in months.
