So, I'm contemplating joining and amateur theatre company. For those not in the know, theatre was my minor at university and I've got lots of practical experience from high school, university, and community theatre things. I was also a competitive speaker in high school and was nationally ranked when I was doing it. I loved it all - acting, ( Read more... )

Go for it! :)
Do the smaller group to start with, then later consider the bigger group I think...

Well, I kind of want to. But I probably won't. Meh.

I worry about the smaller group's disorganization though, because I hate inefficiency and I think I might then try to take on too much in order to make it "better", which I can't really do right now - work is too busy!

That sounds excellent :D

Do you know about the readthrough crowd? Bunch of people, many of whom will be at least friends of friends of yours, who do semi-staged readings of plays? Very sociable, and about the most non-threatening way of doing drama you can imagine. It's obviously not the same as putting on a real production, though, in terms of backstage work and having an audience.

As for your question: join a group, get involved in one production on the edge. Chances are there'll be plenty of overlap between different groups, and by being part of one you'll get a better idea of where you'd best fit. So you can jump ship after that first production, and cling to whichever group is your best fit.

[that said: I'd go for the first. More likelihood of spending your time doing theatre-related things, rather than herding cats]

Would you like to be nagged about this in a couple of weeks' time, or would that just make you more nervous?

I do not know about this! Is it London or Cambridge? How welcome are they to party-crashers?

Problem with all of these London groups is that you seem to have to join for a year to participate in any production, and some of them are pricey! Quite a few do open evenings, which I might give a go and see what the people are like. Maybe.

Nagging is good (Fear of Public Failure), but I'm not sure now is the ideal time to actually be joining. I'm going to be back home for two weeks in November, which seems to be smack in the middle of production rehearsals.

I've also seen an audition call for people with a "passable American accent" and I was like "I totally have one of those"... then it dawned on me that I have an accent all the time... and am now worrying about that!

I don't really know you all that well, but I think the disorganization would drive you batty. It's meant to be fun. Go for the more fun option.

I think you're right about the disorganization driving me batty.

The thing I worry about with the organized one is my paranoia around social inclusion.

Oh well. We'll see!

Do it do it do it!

Do they do random sing throughs of the Messiah in London? I'm sure they do. Start off with something like that - less commitment and fun times.

Hah - I'm not interesting at all, but it's fine. :-p Welcome to the centre of my whining.

I am fairly keen, but I'm a very curious mix of shy and outgoing which is sometimes bizarre...
