Claire, you have 2.5 months if you want to try to save up. . .

it's going to be beyond awesome, I can feel it.

Generally, stick to well lit streets if you're on your own. You should be safe enough in the touristy places, but beware of pickpockets. King's Cross is a bit dodgy, but I've been there sticking to main streets and I've been fine. I've lived in or near London most of my life and only ever been attacked once, when I had my bag snatched. That was in an inner city housing estate where I used to live. Avoid that sort of area, but you probably wouldn't want to go there anyway. I work at Whitechapel, which is a dodgy area, but I've never had any problems there. I just cross the main road from the station and go straight to work. I wouldn't go into the back streets on my own.

Are you trying to find somewhere to stay in London? Do you want recommendations? Have you decided exactly when you'll be in London?

I have a website for hostels in London, and a co-woker used to manage one when he lived in London, so I think I will be alright for accomodations. Plus I'm going to find out how much I will have to pay if I stay at a holiday inn, since the staff discount is huge. But feel free to throw me some places, alright?

I haven't decided if I want to go straight from Aberdeen to London (which is a 7.5h train), so if I want to visit family first then go to London from Nottingham. Which is the long way of saying I have no idea when I will be where. Sorry. Luckily, I do have a few months to make up my mind.

Have you heard of The Generator? Minto often recommends that one to tourists. You're not likely to find anything much cheaper.

*odd look of glee* yes. yes I have. That is one of the ones Steve worked at . . . He also mentioned The Museum, so I will look into both of those for sure.

Cheap I like!
