ICE CREAM!

Aug 01, 2007 21:17

So according to this CNN Money article, European megalopoly Unilever swallowed up American icecream brand Ben & Jerry's a few years back, and states that a handful of giant companies -- including Unilever and arch-rival Nestlé, also European -- dominate the $20 billion ice cream industry in the US. I did not know that. Also interesting:

SPAGHETTI EIS!!! That was our summer Sunday treat when I was little. Oh, the memories. :D

I'll put in a vote for Malaga flavor. Do they call it that in English as well?

Oh yes, I like Malaga too. No idea if it's the same word, I've never actually seen it anywhere outside of Germany I think. Spaghettieis will forever remind me of my grandparents. They used to take me to this local italienische Eisdiele and I would feast on it there. =)

Yum, tiramisu... and straciatella used to be a fave of mine too when I was a kid. Come to think of it, there's little in terms of flavors that I wouldn't like - lol.

Yeah, I have no idea why vanilla is so popular. I only like it with fresh fruit, or still-warm cake so it gets all runny. Maybe that's what it is, people eat it with cake a lot? It has to be the real Bourbon vanilla for me though, not that artificial stuff you get here.

yeah, with the little black dots inside, it's got a very subtle vanilla aroma n doesn't primarely taste chemical. i think you can only get real good ice cream in europe, all those ben & jerrys and hagen dasz flavors are intersting but the best ice cream still comes from the italian gelateria next door. this, thank God, is the same in the UK and Germany.

I've loved butter pecan since I was a child! But I think Vanilla is my favorite, well particularly a vanilla hot fudge sundae. Yummy! Now I want one.

Wow, I see you're keeping up with the comment thing, haha. That's cool. You must have a huge hot fudge sundae now to reward yourself. *Wink

I love a good Vanilla but it needs to have a strong flavor. If I can find Mexican Vanilla ice cream, I am always happy.

Does Mexican vanilla have the black vanilla bean bits in it? I do like that one with freshly-baked cake or raspberry sauce. Yum.

I remember it being very very yellow from all of the vanilla extract. I don't think it had the bean bits in it - but I do like that kind as well. I just love the taste of vanilla. When I was a kid, I couldn't understand why Mom wouldn't let me drink it from the bottle she kept in the spice cabinet. Never did try - too scared of Mom.

Awww, that's so cute that you wanted to drink from the bottle. I have noticed that the rich kind of Mexican icecream is more like gelato than American icecream. It's interesting because things like their mayo are also more like the European kind. I often go to this Mexican store just to buy it and I love their produce - not altered.
