The news is reporting that Boris Yeltsin has died.

It's odd, I can remember him coming into power, and can remember him doing things like climbing on the tank (which they mention in the article), yet I can't see a picture of him except for sitting or being drunk. Possibly both. That's a bit of a shame in a way.

I had a lecturer in college who referred to them as "Comedy" and "Tragedy." It was funny at the time, but the more I read about Putin now, the less humorous it seems.

Given the way he relentlessly abused his body with alcohol it's surprising he lasted this long. Having said that there's a lot to be sad about here. On the one hand he was an idealist who really wanted to push Russia forwards into at least the 20th century, on the other he hadn't the slightest idea how to do it. Much of the hell we're watching in Russia is down to his weakness.
