The most wonderful thing I thought, was the restoration of Marlon Brando's scenes, with powerful visual symbols (using Michangeleo's "Creation of Man" when Jor-el restores his son's power by giving him his life force.
Lois Lane's scene with Clark was just so much better in Richard Donner's cut, versus the lame "ops I fell into the fire and my hand didn't get burned" routine in the theatrical cut.
The writer (well he was the creative consultant), explained that the theatrical release of Superman II was wrong to use the "magic kiss." His rationale was flawless--- Clark Kent never kisses Lois. Turning the Earth back was always the intended ending for Superman II, it was only used in Superman I because the producers wanted a "big splash" at the conclusion.
Great flick! And you wonder what great movies would have been made had the producers been twats and fired the original director and his creative consultant.
Well, Donner rally had no other option than to go with the "world turning" sequence, did he? That was what had been planned, and they didn't have any other footage to go with, other than the magic kiss
( ... )
I actually did like Superman Returns. Just seeing Superman onscreen again, with that fantastic John Williams soundtrack, was thrilling to me. The only big negative I had was that I felt that Lois Lane was totally boring...the exact opposite of Margot Kidder!
I only picked up the Donner version, so I'm fine, although there were sounds issues with the last deleted scene with luthor and Miss T...but I think that's a defect of the existing material, not my DVD.

Oh, and did you know there is a technical issue with disc 1 of the original Superman reissue? Seems the 2.0 sound mix was left off by mistake:
