I'm trying to put together a list of places I haven't visited yet that that I would very much like to go to. Here's what I've got so far:

Europe: Rome, Barcelona, Athens, Monaco.
(Done: Much of the UK & Ireland, Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin, Warsaw, Moscow, St Petersburg, Kiev, Tromso, Helsinki, Tallinn, Istanbul, Dubrovnik)

North America: Toronto, ( Read more... )

Wow, livejournal. Old Skool.

Athens is awesome, not everyone likes it because it's filty and chaotic but I love Athens. Really good Goth scene as well.

You've missed out the entirity of the Middle East & North Africa (Sharm doesn't count).

Yeah, that's because most of what I know about the area comes from the News, which isn't entirely encouraging (although I wouldn't be worried about visiting anywhere that the foreign office wouldn't advise me against), and the rest from my knowledge of religion, which doesn't interest me in terms of tourism. And of course I'm not massively keen on seeing the thermometer break 30C.

But if there's stuff that would make me want to go on holiday there, I'd be interested to hear about it.

From what I've read so far I reckon you might like Jordan (I'll be in a better position to advise after I've been there next month). The towns and cities are all quite modern and perhaps not as interesting as some but there lot's of very cool natural stuff like the Wadi Rum, the Dead Sea, general desert landscape type stuff (with the opportunites for quad biking and things if that sort of thing takes youre fancy) and then there's ancient ruins and stuff stuff like Petra. Aquaba has the coral reefs and diving (it's actually very near Sharm) but is by all accounts a more interesting town. Plus Jordan is small - you can hire a car and burn around long straight desert roads and nowhere is more than 5 hours from Amman. It's also very Westernised i.e. you can buy beer and wear shorts.

You also left out Central America, though the dislike of high temperatures might explain this... also it seems you stick to cities, but otherwise I'd say Costa Rica is absolutely amazing and well worth a visit.

City-wise, I'd recommend Cuba & New Orleans, both of which have doubtless changed some since I went there (particularly the latter due to Katrina) but both of which are wonderful and unique. Plus you haven't had a mojito till you've had it at La Bodeguita del Medio :-)

I think of America in terms of continents, so N/S covers the lot. And I'm not stuck on cities, I just know about more of them than other places I've not been.

I've done Havana + a tourist resort in Cuba. New Orleans should be on the list though, I was due to go shortly after Katrina but that fell by the wayside.

I'd recommend skipping Jo'Berg in favour of Cape Town
I also think Kenya is well worth a visit

I really want to go to San Francisco, though mainly because it is the capital of fusion bellydance, so my reasoning is a bit niche.

I should be hitting SF this Autumn, looking forward to that!

Chicago? (I would say that since it's my hometown)

Why else? I'd happily visit Chicago, but as it stands I'd probably only get around to it if I was doing a road trip around that part of the states.

Loads of great museums, interesting parks (one with a free zoo), interesting architecture (home of the first skyscraper, Frank Lloyd Wright, and 2 of the tallest buildings in the world). Loads of music venues with rock, punk, blues, indie and goth (and other kinds of music) bands and DJs. The best pizza in the US, loads of other fine restaurants (great Mexican and Polish food as examples).

If road tripping in the general area, you could go to Indianapolis (car racing), Milwaukee, Madison, Minneapolis and loads of smaller towns and cities. There are large national parks if you want to go camping.

I suppose it depends on what interests you. hirez wanted to see Chicago to visit the places where The Blues Brothers was filmed.
