summer somerville evening

I have to admit, it's nice here. :)

I've been taking the bus and walking everywhere, and I haven't had to go anywhere too far away yet, so I'm still chuffed with the bus and how it comes approximately on time.

Today I got to spend quality time with abilouise, get in a well checkup at a new doctor that I really liked (vital signs look great, by the way ( Read more... )

Are you sure you're in Boston? ;-)

Fortunately, the MBTA makes the bus tracking data publicly available so there's lots of mobile apps for tracking the buses. I use something called MBTA Alerts Pro, but that's an Android app. The MBTA website has a list of some of the available apps: http://www.mbta.com/rider_tools/apps/ You'd probably find even more if you check the app store on your phone. The data is quite reliable - I found it possible to wait inside my house when the weather is crappy, and only walk over to the bus stop to get there a minute or 2 before the bus arrives.

We should hang out sometime and talk flying :-)

Ahahahaha, yes I am sure.

I haven't been taking the T (subway) so I've been spared the worst. However, yesterday I waited for a bus that was supposed to arrive, but never did, and then the next one came at the wrong time too. So...perhaps the streak of good luck is over.

I downloaded two MBTA apps so far for the iPhone, one is awesome and the other shit. They were both free though, so I can't complain!

I was going to say something similar to pywaket about the bus, though personally I find http://nextbus.com/ better than any of the apps - it does a good job of figuring out where you are and automatically picking the nearest few bus stops to display.

You should come visit some time!

After this comment, I went looking and found an iPhone app called Smart Ride. It's free and it has the NextBus information. It's REALLY useful, especially when I'm at a big place like Sullivan Station and can't necessarily figure out if the bus I need is actually even at that location.

Yes, I would like to come visit! When? Are you home on paternity leave right now?

I've gone back to work - my employer is generous but not that generous - so I'm generally home evenings and weekends. Scheduling's still pretty hard - probably best to just email or call if you want to come over (very close to Davis).

I am, thank you!

Tonight rangerpretzel and I hung out on drdidj's deck in Cambridgeport and watched the sun go down and the katydids get loud.

Life is pretty good. :)
