Mysterious gift on a Midsummer eve

This evening, for only the second time ever, I saw a Common Nighthawk in Seattle's sky. Now, this may not sound like a big deal, when this most conspicuous of Nighjars is a common sight in many parts of North America, but it's remarkable for Seattle. I've been stalking watery rubbish-strewn concrete bridge bottoms looking for my beloved cliff swallow so I can sympathize. I just happen to have an affection for a more commmon bird, so maybe I should feel lucky.

That sounds like my kind of fun!

I love swallows. I saw a new one for me a few weeks ago, Northern Rough-winged swallows. There were a few pairs nesting in the bank behind a lovely secluded beach on Lopez Island.

Yes! They are rare as hens' teeth in Washington, but I've seen a few over here. You can tell them apart from Bank Swallows by their more ruddy color and lack of clear white bib and throat. I'm really missing the violet-green swallows I used to see all around the Pudget Sound, though.
