What are those tiny wormy-shaped things with spots at one end served with Japanese meals? If I had to guess, I'd say it was Nyoro Nyoro (aka Hattivatit).
It's a bad picture, I know, but the stuff on the left here:

Well spotted kernelpanic! It turns out it is "some kind of seaweed". I asked today what it was. It took two people to answer. Near as I can figure from the response, you are supposed to add soy sauce and eat it with rice. It wasn't so bad that way. Which is not a surprise, since that's equivalent to the American "add ketchup and eat it on a bun", ie anything can be made pallatable to adding ketchup and eating on a bun ("I just ran over a squirrel" "Don't worry -- just add ketchup and eat it on a bun").
There was no Hattivatit today, so I could not ask.
Could the green stuff on the right be overcooked soba? We sometimes get green soba noodles from the Thai/Asian grocery near us, in addition to the usual brownish ones. They definitely get gloppy when they are cooked too long, and that's easy to do since they cook so fast.
