When did comics start to suck?

Ten years ago, I could stop in a comic shop every fortnight or so and pick up something good. Now I'm lucky to find something good in a trip every 4 months ( Read more... )

This is the exact sort of thing I think is the problem. It's the sort of thing I'd buy in the shops. I admit the format is a bit better than other online comics in that it's release six pages at a time. But since it's released online it's not going to be in shops. I know I can buy the graphic novels online when they come out, but in this case it's not that good that I'd want to buy it (though it may get better later -- I'm waiting for things to come together in it). Contrast to Serenity rose, which I will buy when it comes out in paper form, partly because I like it and I think he needs the money, and partly cos 1 page every few weeks is too slow for my patience.

I'm not sure where I'm going with this, actually.

Can I point you in the direction of this:

Rather fine, if an isolated case!

I don't really like King much, so I've avoided the graphic novelisations. The reviews of thet I've read pretty much that's pretty much cliff notes for one of his better novels. Is that accurate?

I'm tempted by Fables. When it started I purposely stayed away since it sounded like it was doomed. But it appears to have gone on long enough, so I'll probably pick up a graphic novel at some point.
I read a few DMZ, and they never really excited me. Perhaps you could recommend a good one?

I've been picking up Hellboy lately; enjoying that. I also get DMZ and Ex Machina, but they may not be your kinda thing. Courtney Crumrin is good, though infrequent, as is anything else by Ted Naifeh.

I think a bunch of good stuff has moved to one-off, small-format graphic novels: Scott Pilgrim, Black Metal, and several of the Minx line.
