In Which it is Suggested That the Author Get a New Hobby

I'm thinking about another what-not-to-build bike: a backwards bike where the seat is mounted to a reversed stem and the handlebars are mounted to the seat tube, so you steer by moving your butt from side to side. The bottom bracket would have to be turned around, so I'd probably use a frame with a one-piece BB to eliminate issues with things ( Read more... )

I wouldnt worry about a bottom bracket unscrewing. my impression is that it's just in case of a sieze-up that the cups will come out. and anyhow, you need to worry about if the thing is ridable at all before being concerned about effects that might take place after you put many many miles on it ( ... )

My plan was to use an old-style bolt-on hanger, but there was too much interference with the seat stay, so I decided to go single-speed after all. At the moment, the thing is, as my co-worker put it, a total shit-show; totally unridable. Next time I've got some down-time to work on the thing, I'm going to make some serious changes. The current frame is a step-through, and I'm going to change that up for a men's-style frame with a straight, nearly-horizontal top tube. From there, I'll mount the seat to the top tube, turn the stem 90 degrees, and mount a set of flat mtb bars to act as a sort of tiller. If we had some cruiser bars, I would use those with the stem mounted normally.

The morning was fun, though, and I was productive insofar as I determined that my original design wouldn't work.

potential solution for the sudden lack of steering problem: put a seatbelt on that thing. although, then you've got the problem of if you fall, which you probably will, you can't bail.

okay, here's what you need to do:

it'll be easier.
