My schedule is all full and poo. I just had a three hour exam which we all FAILED, so it was quite funny, in a panicky sort of way. Bloody Downing. Gah. We're off to a cheap book thing for the classics peeps now with wine (what is it with all the free wine in this place??) and I'm late, so I shall run. Write me!!

it was just three hours of bits of latin and greek to translate. Translate?! I knew about two percent of the vocab and even when I could remember what a word meant I had no idea of the sense. The six of us broke out in hysterical giggles about a third of the way through. Vanessa remarked, apropos of nothing, "It's quite good fun actually, making up Virgil - do you get marks for creativity?" and I couldn't stop laughing for about ten minutes. Gah. Never mind. The guy who gave it to us (phD student lecturer person) said he got 37% in his and Millett went apeshit. We think we'll be lucky if any of us get half that. Ah well. I never pretended to do language - I got in on the merit of being able to write essays, not realising that when I got here I'd be spending the vast majority of my time doing language. I feel so thick. It's all rather ridiculous really, and the first two essays I have aren't even on things I've ever done before

The college is beautiful too! And bloody enormous! Am so going to get out of stupid singing workshop at Warwick and come and see you. Rah. (See, this course is doing me permanent damage. Yes! Your beautiful picture in pride of place (three people have commented on it already)! The pink star is a present from Andi and says "star moments" in Finnish, so a French Lesbians one is definitely in order. Is yours still on your door at home?

Downing isn't so huge - not like (say) St Johns or Jesus which doesn't have as much open space but which you can get lost in, which is fun. The thing about Downing is although it's got parkland in the middle of the quad, once you're there that's kind of it. No interesting corners, or nooks and crannies (I always thought that phrase sounded rude - but then it also sounds like grannies, which is a disturbing image and not one I want to think about)....

And oh!!! yesyesyes!!!! (am saying yes too much; hope I don't sound too orgasmic) You must come and visit, and if you can't then I'll come to you, but I'd rather you came here because then you could meet Julian and see your Cambridge people and there are more people for you to meet, and stuff. oh, I'm sorry. I'm in a very silly mood. I think I've eaten too many Trebor Extra Strong Mints. The problem is once you open a packet it's impossible to stop, and I had two glasses of wine earlier at the Classics party in Heffers (a party in a bookshop!!!). I spent a silly amount of money on books. It's insane how expensive dictionaries are.

My room is gorgeous - oak panelling and it's huge! - and has a beautifulbeautiful view (the second photo was taken standing a couple of metres outside my window, on the grass we aren't supposed to walk on). The moment I stepped into it I couldn't believe my luck. But after living in it for a week I'm learning that beauty isn't everything - it doesn't have a sink and I hate running down the stone corridor in barefeet at 7am just to brush my teeth, in a dressing-gown past the glass-panelled main door that the entire quad can see through. And it's bloody cold, especially at night. I've got into the habit of piling about six blankets onto my bed and just diving underneath them and huddling there until it warms up by bodyheat alone. I still haven't worked out my fire; I loathe winter

I know what you mean about the cold. My room at school this term is for some reason enormous with a tiny radiator at the end under the window so it always seems several degrees colder than the rest of the house.
