Following you on twitter. :]

Glad to hear you're having a good time in Portland. Not so glad to hear about your laptop. I have no advice, but I hope you're able to get your files.

you can buy a device that plugs into your USB port that you plug a hard drive into and then you can access it that way.

or, even better, you can buy a case that turns an internal hard drive into an external one. it's like the first thing i stated, except it's more convenient-- you can then take the hard drive with you and use it as a portable. these only run about 20 bucks-- you just have to be absolutely sure to get the right size casing. they make them for large desktop hard drives as well as for laptop hard drives.
if you do this, there is a chance that you'll be able to use the external hard drive with your mac, if you can find the right driver software.

i know you don't know me, but, hopefully that helps?

have you tried the firewire target boot disk? If you have another mac, or computer with firewire, and plug the firewire cables in both macs, turn it on and press... t? (google firewire target boot disk) on the dead lappy as it's booting up, it can turn the mac itself into a big-ass external hard drive. During reading week, my laptop bit the dust, and this is the method I used to get the data off the HDD.
