i laughed out loud today when i saw one of these lying on its side next to an entrance ramp to the highway--it just looked absurd, there by itself like that, in the rain. i never know what to call these, and i've heard several bizarre names. what do YOU call one of these?

I'm surprised you don't know this BOOKishlady.

They are known as reading pillows.

i have never heard that name, but i have heard several others--i'm waiting to offer them up until more people weigh in. "reading pillow" sounds so pompous...heh.

I'm with Benchly on this one. A Husband Pillow is what i've heard it called.

is that because it just sits there, with its arms outstretched, waiting for a beer to be placed at the end of each one? i don't get it. a friend just told me she calls it a "backrest."

Strangely enough, I can't find the origin of this term.

One Yahoo! Answers person said it was called that to generate associations with the comfort, support, and reliability of a husband. He would have said more but he was late for his Knights of Columbus meeting.

Thing is...last night as I typed my opinion on the name of said pillow...I continued to write...named as such because like husbands and like Benchly himself it just lays there and does nothing : )

Instead of posting, I erased it knowing that I just would've opened the door for Benchly to not only search out the root of the name but also to comment on knowing plenty of women who just "lay there and do nothing."

Glad you didn't let me down Benchly!
