amarin_rose requested it. Um...well, specifically she asked for "The one where Teddi Kord and Merit meet the JLI - and have to save their butts along with Michael, who is trying not to let his sekrit identity out." Aaand I did this. (I can't believe I hadn't used this prompt before. Wow. Lucky.)
Oh right. This takes place in the same AU as number four of
Five Times Beetle Was A Girl (And One Time He Wasn't) and number three of
Five Times Jerry Falwell Did Not Approve. The Teddi Has A Baby AU.
Title subject to change if I think of something better. Suggestions welcome.
Secret Heroes
Why the Madmen chose to attack the science museum was a mystery to Booster. All he knew was that it was damn inconvenient, since he was currently accompanying his girlfriend and her daughter on a tour of each exhibit in order of how much Merit enjoyed them.
That sometimes meant walking from one end of the museum to the other and then right back, but it was worth it to see Merit's delighted grin, a trait she shared with her mother.
When the hysterical laughter of the Madmen reached them, Booster hustled Teddi and Merit into a nearby storage closet and turned to find somewhere out of the way he could change and contact the JLI...only to find his progress stopped by a firm grip on his arm.
"I have to--" he started, turning back.
Fierce blue eyes met his. "Don't you dare go out there and get yourself hurt trying to stop them."
"But--"
"If it makes your sense of manly obligation feel any better, you're staying here to protect us!" Teddi snapped.
"Teddi--"
"Michael." Biting her lip, Teddi leaned close and whispered, "Please, Mike."
"What's wrong?" Merit suddenly spoke up from behind Teddi, staring up at them in worried confusion. "I don't think we're s'posed to be in here."
Sighing, Booster took Teddi's hand in his and gave it a quick squeeze before kneeling down to address Merit. "There's some bad guys outside, sweetie," he said slowly. "So we're staying here till the Justice League makes them go away. Okay? And...uh...maybe you can get Fire's autograph."
"Really?" Merit squealed. "She's my fav'rite!"
Booster rolled his eyes. It was an endless source of amusement and frustration that, despite his best efforts, Merit adored Fire and was mostly indifferent to Booster Gold.
"Fee, fi, fo, furl, I hear the voice of a little girl!"
Booster shot to his feet and whirled to face the door. Teddi was backing away from it in horror, placing a protective hand on Merit's shoulder and pushing the girl behind her.
"Little pig, little pig, let me come in!"
Booster dug around in his pocket for his JLI communicator just as a fist smashed through the door. "Heeeeeere's Johnny!" the multicolored Madman growled, grinning at them through the hole. Then the door was crashing open and Madmen swarmed in, grabbing and tugging at them. Booster thought he managed to hit the emergency alert on his communicator, but Merit was screaming and it distracted him.
"Let go of my daughter, you bastards!"
Fists flying, Booster managed to get a glimpse of Teddi holding her own against three Madmen. One of them had tried to take Merit from her and Teddi had grabbed a broom and a bottle of something with a skull and crossbones on it. One of the Madmen was staggering away, screeching and giggling as he rubbed at his eyes. Another was clutching his groin and fell to his knees as Booster watched.
The next few minutes were a blur, but when it was over, Booster was surrounded by unconscious Madmen. Glancing over at Teddi revealed that she had taken out two more on top of the three she had been dealing with earlier. Booster's breath caught looking at her.
Her short hair was a mess and her face held the kind of expression he had only seen on Big Barda and Wonder Woman before. She was a ferocious, broom-wielding warrior and for a moment Booster wondered what she would look like in spandex.
A whimpered "Mommy?" brought the world back into focus and Booster shook the image from his head as Teddi dropped the broom and knelt down to hug Merit, murmuring reassurances.
Of course, that was when the Justice League showed up.
"Booster, where's the--Whoa! ...Emergency?" At his frantic hand motions, Fire landed next to him and powered down, raising a green eyebrow at him. "Why'd you call if you were going to take care of it yourself?"
"Because I'm out of costume and my girlfriend doesn't know I'm Booster Gold!" he hissed at her, glancing worriedly over at Teddi. The woman was still fussing over Merit and hadn't even noticed Fire's arrival. "And...we didn't really have a choice. They came after us."
"'We'?" Fire murmured.
Booster shrugged. "Teddi helped."
"Fire!" Bouncing in Teddi's arms, Merit pointed. "Look, Mommy! Look! Look, it's Fire! Isn't she pretty? Look!"
A pleased smile settled on Fire's green lips as she turned to face the girl. "Hola, menina pequena, are you okay?"
"I'm fine!" Merit piped cheerfully, skipping up to the woman when Teddi let her go. "Mommy and Mike made the bad men go to sleep can I have your aut-auto--Autograph! Mike said you'd give me one what's an autograph!"
"Aren't you precious," Fire chuckled, glancing at Booster.
Booster squirmed, though he couldn't fight off a proud smile. Damn right his little girl was precious.
"Here, sweetie," Teddi said, handing a pen and a small pad of paper to Merit.
Moving to stand beside Booster, Teddi smiled up at him. "Looks like you can take care of yourself after all."
"You weren't so bad yourself," Booster murmured, wrapping an arm around her waist and leaning down to kiss her.
In the background, Fire was complimenting Merit's name and Merit was bouncing excitedly and telling her all about her Mommy and Mike, the heroes.
