This story brings that feeling into sharp focus. Yet the fact that one person recognizes this even for a moment gives me a little hope and makes me want to applaud.

It was a nice touch, interspersing the italic verses of the song with the description. I can almost hear them singing in my own mind, and I LOVE caroling! We forget how reverent so many of our carols are, and the way you contrasted the awe of the song with the hectic pace of shopping was poignant.
My only other feedback is the last line is a little weak...maybe there's some way to say this more powerfully? "steeling herself to face the joy of Christmas once again." I don't know... play with it.
