Maybe you'll still get to the do PhD just something more along the lines of what you want to do? Good luck anyhow.

You came to a quick and -- I think -- appropriate conclusion. Whether that particular conclusion was what you had hoped for or not, the interview was productive: You now can move along.

Much, MUCH better than had you done a year and withdrawn.

you speak the truth, however I feel I made a huge mistake in agreeing to go ahead before I'd even heard the idea. Not the smartest thing I've ever done. Mind you, it's far from the stupidest thing I've ever done. I've not heard from the guy yet, so I can only hope that he's not too pissed off.
