Hey, I'm new :P
Just wanted to say hello and stuff. Also, is it just me, or are do people who are, well, born bright, tend to be lazy?
Speaking of which: Why do you think Hermione wasn't sorted into Ravenclaw? She isn't as brave as she's smart. Any ideas?

That thing she did for the elves is, what I think, is one of the main canon examples of why she's a Gryffindor. Could you imagine Luna or Cho starting an organization for the humane treatment of house elves? There's also the fact that she doesn't really respect the rules, something I've yet to see a canon Ravenclaw example of. Marietta, she was a Ravenclaw, right? is the reason the D.A. was disbanded.

I was never under the impression that Ravenclaws in general tend to live by the rules. I thought Marietta was just mean. And actually, I think I could see Luna arrange S.P.E.W, she's just weird like that :P

I don't really think organizing SPEW was an act of weirdness. That and I wasn't trying to imply that Ravenclaws live by the rules just that when compared to the wanton breaking of them canon Gryffindors expressed and the disdain for them canon Slytherins had, they were more likely to respect them.

That's a good point, but that fits Hufflepuffs better, no? SPEW wasn't weird in the exact sense, but come on, she should've known that people wouldn't listen much to a teenage witch.

Definitely a good point from onezeronothing, but there's also your own point to consider. Hermione is never portrayed as anything close to lazy- on the contrary, she's always working around the clock (and back again!!) to get *things* done.

I'd read a great essay awhile back that I don't have the link to here on my work computer, but it stressed the point that Hermione had to work hard to be smart. Not that she didn't have it in her, that she was unintelligent, but Ravenclaws seem to tend toward the effortlessly lazy. My friend and I in high school were great examples of that- she'd spend HOURS on homework, and I'd forget, or just blow it off, until minutes before class (sometimes in class, telling the teacher I'd misplaced it in my bag) when I'd whip out everything required and voila- matching grades. Bugged the you-know-poo out of her, let me tell ya. But it freed me up for random discussions on time travel with the other smart-slacker types in the back of the class.

I didn't think of that. So all of us 'Claws are procrastinators, huh? :)

Welcome! :D Glad to see new people!

I don't think people in born_bright are lazy. Just busy. I'm writing a Master's thesis, for example. Believe me, I'd love to spend more time here.

I think Hermione could well have been sorted into Ravenclaw. She often referred to as the best in her year. I think part of the reason she's in Gryffindor is because that's where she wanted to be. We know from Harry's sorting that one can state a preference and have that preference honored.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but while she was talking to Ron and Harry on the train in the first book, didn't she say she thought Gryffindor would be the best house? If she went into the sorting with that mentality, and if she was qualified for both Ravenclaw and Gryffindor, her own preference might have won out.

That is not to say that Hermione demanded to be placed into Gryffindor. Rather, I think the Hat might have sensed her desire, her subconscious "push," and decided to place her there.

Oh, you're right, of course, if she preferred Gryff she'd get it. And she did say that the hat considered putting her in Ravenclaw at first, but decided to go Gryffindor.

I'm sorry I said that, obviously it isn't true. I didn't mean spesificaly people from this community; I meant bright people in general. Apparently, I was wrong. I know I'm incredibly lazy, I thought maybe I'm not the only one. Alas, I was wrong :P

Yeah, that's a good point, 'puffs are cool that way.
We'll win! After all, we're bright people :P All we need is some collective effort!

Hi I'm new here too. :)

I think as others were saying, the Ravenclaws are more the get the grades without effort types and learning for the sake of learning, whereas Hermione has this drive to work hard to get top grades, which you can see when she agonises over her exam results, even though she gets over a 100% a lot of the time! :)

Oh yes, we should definitely do our best to win it. :D
