unfortunately, as i said, i missed it. but i saw the training paper for it lying on a table sometime later, with trop marks hand-written on the translation.

i hope someone who was there could describe it in more detail; for instance, did she look away from the Torah scroll while translating?

I don't think she did. She seemed to be reading the pasuk in the scroll over again and simultaneously translating in her head.

I'm not going to spend precious time looking up the source right now, but I'm pretty sure that that (looking at the scroll while tarjuming) is problematic. Also, it's problematic for the same person to be the kaurei and the mesar"geim. (r" = uvular" tr"ill).

The reason for each of the dinim is the same: So that the audience not come to think that the Tar"gum is wr"itten in the scr"oll.

(And lest you should think that this is unlikely to happen, I have actually seen it happen. On the second day of `Atzeres, I was laaying the haftoro, and had to insert the Targumic poem יציב פתגם into the haftoro. A certain woman in the women's section was confused about the way that יציב פתגם was printed in the Artscroll Machzer [with רִין printed at the far left of each line], and she asked my then-girlfriend how the Targumic poem appeared in the actual scroll of Terei-`Osor.)
