How does one practice Aikido in thou new environ? I've seen someone solitarily practicing some sort of swordplay at a debate meeting(Japenophiles tend to predominate the debate scene for some curious reason.) during 9th grade, so that's the closest visualization I'm getting.

Outside of weapons, which I think are usually practiced alone, the techniques are all two sided: you practice both as the attacker (the uke) and the person using the technique to redirect the attack (the nage). (pronounced OO-kay and NA-gay).

So, two people face each other, the nage puts out his arms to be grabbed, the uke grabs them, and the nage perfoms the technique. The uke is supposed to resist the nage, so that the technique will be applicable in the real world.

Of course, we usually just relax and let the other practice the steps before we start to resist the movements.
