i agree with You wholeheartedly.
You know... i think it's quite funny that we can say that we're Christians and then judge others so harshly.
i believe that love/mercy is the foremost Christian virtue and that we should exhibit it far more often.
in the Old Testament, the death penalty was there to show us that sin has serious consequences. but Jesus came and fulfilled the law. was he wrong to spare the life of the woman caught in adultery? i think not. we all sin and no one has the right to take the life of another human being for any reason. revenge will get us nowhere.
an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.

it can be frightening to this about this, but religion is different than faith.
just because religion, the church and its rules created by man, say that capital punishment is sanctioned by the bible doesnt mean that that is what you have to truly believe.
i have faith in my view that the death penalty is NOT something that jesus wanted for society.
i TRULY BELIEVE that it is a horrendous action to inflict on another individual, no matter his crime.

take a stand against what people view as "religion" if it tells you that killing is ever ok.
you know that it isnt.
you have that faith.
and that is what is important.

oh, and a little bright eyes to further the point:

"we take an eye for an eye until no one can see
we stumble blindly forward, repeating history"

Well Dan, I agree with you and the other commenters for sure. But I think there is an area you need to consider--Jesus came to FULFILL the law not abolish it. That implies something to a higher standard for all, but doesn't eliminate punishment. However, since God gave us life, I feel only He is qualified to take it--not mere courtrooms or juries ("He who is without sin cast the first stone"). But we can't allow criminals to go around killing innocent human lives with out control. We need to think of society as a whole. That's why I strongly believe in Life in Prison--contain the evil but allow for an element that didn't exist in the Old Testament--Redemption. Jesus took the "death penalty" for us all, let's tell those convicts about it.

Amen amen Andrew. I am totally for locking up a rapist or a killer for the rest of his life. Its simply killing them which I refuse to tolerate.

Life in prison isn't a walk in the park and it also is very difficult to get out of. However, if all criminals are pretty much guaranteed life in prison after a crime just about every homeless person that was ever hungry will jump at the thought of killing some one. What actually he happens is this: The lives you think you saved from execution as a punishment you lost from people who take advantage of the system. Prison is guaranteed food, water, heat, weight room, medical attention and shelter. Most of the community service convicts do is very light and does little to pay back what the tax payers put in. For some life in prison may be undesirable, forcing them to commit suicide rather than being given an option between life or death. The prison is then responsible for paying the family of the convict. Every convict that has a life sentence is one the American people have to pay for. And not just money, life sentences tax in many forms, including the lives of the innocent ( ... )
