I made it. I'm now in Germany. I can tell, because everything I try to read and everyone I try to talk to speak a language I can't understand, all of the electric plugs need adaptors to work with my computer and one has to pay to use a public bathroom ( Read more... )

AWWW!

I was instructed to e-mail you by my mom, who apparently had at least some of this from your mom (although after the computer got plugged in and the Internet was found) -- will this do?

Also, if you want books, I have some on my computer (very small files, actually) that I, uh, absolutely have not downloaded illegally. *shifty* Or you could see if you can find/get to the library -- I bet they have at least some books in English, seeing as the Worcester library has books in what I believe is Korean.

Ummm. Saskia is at Amherst now (don't know if you got her e-mail with contact info, but she's still checking saskia underscore fabricant at yahoo dot com).

Not much else to tell ... I want to drop my English class ("familiar" essays, i.e. creative writing) but can't 'cause I need to take either it or Lit & Comp, which is worse. :P There is a mysterious dearth of mild Cabot cheddar cheese in Worcester -- I have now found two stores with every variety of Cabot cheddar except mild, and begin to suspect conspiracy ( ... )

Thanks, navi_di. It's good to hear from you. I miss my friends. I miss my room. I miss the English language.

*Sighs melodramatically* Poor, poor me, forced to spend my vacation in a major European capital. I suspect that I have entirely the wrong perspective on this entire trip, but I refuse to give my parents the satisfaction of admitting that. And I think I'm coming down with a cold.

Is it really that hard to get by in English there?? From what I remember, it seemed like everyone spoke English, so I'd stumble through some restaurant order or something in really bad German, and then the person would say, "Okay, that'll be ready in a minute." and I'd feel really dumb.

Well, I dunno, I think the perspective depends a lot on what you guys are doing. I mean, I'd love to go to Berlin and do touristy stuff, but my love would be somewhat less for going to Berlin and hanging around Internet-less while my parents moved in.

Also, there's this cool thing you can do on LJ with html -- [lj user="screenname"] with actual whatever-those-things-are (> and <, if that shows up) instead of brackets will get you bounce_ko. Sorry if you knew that already, but lots of people seem not to.

I hope you feel better. Both the cold, and the being-less-than-enthusiastic-about-the-trip. But just think, you'll get to see your so-called friends in a week and a half (if not sooner). You could spend some of your time listening to Die Zauberflote. Admittedly it's in German, but Mozart is just good. The little booklets usually have English translations.

Anyway, I miss you, and hope you can have some fun in Germany. Also, it'd be nice if you didn't get sick (I'm sure you need to be told this).
